Life-Size Robots Hit the Streets for Pure Amusement

Argentinian director Fernando Livschitz is known for transforming cities into amusement parks. He put a swing on the top of the Empire State Building and bumper cars on highways in Egypt. In the short film, Wind Up Bots, he releases a herd of wind up toys into the streets of Buenos Aires. A bicycling duck and race car drivers merge with more usual traffic, while a toy rocket gets ready for lift-off and a robot relaxes poolside. The cute invasion is soundtracked by 60s boogie rock band Canned Heat’s song “Going up the Country,” in which an upbeat flute seems to be the starring instrument. It’s a fun accompaniment for the awkward movements of the shuffling toys, and helps paint Buenos Aires as a sunny city, filled with people who seem happy to welcome toy-folk into their midst. We have a feeling this only works with charming older toys, though; if a clan of Barbies, Furbys, or zombie Flappy Birds showed up, the locals might be moved to break the peace.
