A Beautifully Animated Adaptation Of Stephen King's Beachworld

See the trailer for Maria Ivanova’s short sci-fi film.

With the volume of short stories he’s got, it was a smart choice for Stephen King to establish his Dollar Baby policy—the author sells the dramatization rights of his short works to filmmakers and students for a buck a piece. One person who got in on the action is St. Petersburg-based animator Maria Ivanova, who saw potential for an adaptation in Beachworld, a 1984 sci-fi story set on a desert planet following a crash-landing.

The characters in Ivanova’s black and white animation are beautifully designed, with convincingly weary expressions, vast stretches of foreboding landscape, and steely androids. From the preview, their movements seem slightly clunky, but the overall vibe of desperation is unscathed by it. Not bad for a ten-month-long solo animation job. We can’t wait to see the whole short.

Once you’ve seen the preview, check out some of Ivanova’s sci-fi themed concept art and you’ll get an idea of where she draws her inspiration from.
