In the basement of a tobacco processing plant-turned-art space, five GIF artists have spent the last six months figuring out how to bring their work into the real world. Mana Contemporary's Surface, opening Saturday, January 21, features the work of Traceloops, Julian Glander, Thoka Maer, Zolloc, and Sam Cannon. Each has developed a following on Tumblr and Instagram, and will transmute their digital prowess into three dimensions this weekend.

GIF art is older than it ever was, seeing artists make their ways from social media fame to brick-and-mortar gallery shows. As the established art world takes increased interested in the medium, artists are finding new ways to adapt their visions to the physical world. The show is sponsored by GIPHY, who last year hosted Loop Dreams, an art show dedicated to making GIF art tangible. The artists at Surface are blazing the same trail using immersive light installation, performance, sculpture, and interactive media. Scroll below to glimpse their previous works, and keep your eyes peeled for the next level at Surface this weekend.
