In “Free,” an exhibit that opened last night at the New Museum, creator Takeshi Murata has utilized 3D modeling program Cinema 4D to explore the notion of knockoffs and the handling of public figures’ images using the popular cartoon character, Popeye. Along with work by 23 other multi-media artists, “Free” examines the broadened experiences and new access to free information as well as the limitations caused by the internet’s bounty of information. To predict how this mash-up might look, watch Murata’s Monster Movie and the Popeye teaser in a row. The exhibit runs through January 23rd.
