With his jarring series of self-portraits, entitled [Sensorial Self-Portraits](https://www.flickr.com/photos/53062614@N03/seEdu Monteiro takes the artist selfie zeitgeist to the next level ts/72157624748166929), photographer Edu Monteiro takes the artist-selfie zeitgeist to the next level. In each photo, he hides behind outlandish masks made of everything from cigarettes and feathers, to unidentified intestines, and even a squid. “The worst was being buried in sand," Monteiro tells The Creators Project. "The noise of falling sand burying me was the sound of death. On the other hand, when I took all of plush pets of my daughter and covered myself with them, it was a kind of life's celebration—childhood, it was a very pleasant experience.” Behind the sand and the plush pets, Monteiro aims to connect with his audience and cause an emotional response. “As Medusa by looking in the mirror, we are petrified when we recognize ourselves in the images of the photographer,” he says.
