Just four days after the shooting at the LGBT night club Pulse in Orlando, a three-day Miami festival celebrated transgender artists and offered both education and worship opportunities for the trans community. The first weekend of the second annual TransArt festival took place in Miami Beach last week, and the second takes place this weekend in Wilton Manors, FL. The TransArt festival is unique in its focus: while many trans-oriented programs focus entirely on health and wellness—education and interdenominational faith are still important parts of the TransArt festival—the festival centers most closely around the power of art and creativity.The TransArt festival is organized by the Unity Coalition, the first organization dedicated to the LGBT Hispanic community in South Florida. Herb Sosa, the founder and director of Unity Coalition, says that the festival hopes to respond to a “need for positive and talented representation of our transgender community.” He believes that the community support and the pool of talent generated by the festival will continue to grow in the coming years.The schedule for this weekend includes a "documentaries and debates" night, an art exhibit, a talk about healthcare for the trans community, and a dance party. Last weekend’s festival featured an art installation, a poetry reading, a TransBodies photography exhibit, and a landscape photography exhibit.
