Rotoscoped Taylor Swift Vid Features Tentacles and Twerking Burgers

Mute it if you have to; this isn't about the music.

This is not your average Taylor Swift video: “Redrawing Taylor Swift – Shake it Off Rotoscoped” lacks wholesome hunks, impractical ball gowns, and even the obligatory heartbreak. In their stead, 49 University of Newcastle animation students have rotoscoped a riotous millet of 2,767 hand-drawn frames. With 52 frames assigned to each young animator, Swift’s recent viral hit “Shake It Off” has been channeled into an unintentionally viral video crawling with T-Swift tentacles, twerking burger buns, and even in the popstar’s poetic demise.

"The students really got into the process," Professor Jane Shadbolt tells the Newcastle Newsroom. "Some of them loved the song, and others hated it—but all of them were able to bring their own unique interpretation to it. It's a great way to get a feel for how animation is put together from thousands of frames and get a feel for how movement happens on screen."

“Everyone is super excited to see their work being seen by so many people all over the world," she continues. "They all worked so hard on their individual frames to create each look it seems like a fantastic payoff for all that hard work. We're all hoping Taylor Swift might see it!"

Despite the video’s inspiration, there's no prerequisite T-Swift fanaticism to enjoy the work—each of the 49 students contributed wacky, beautiful, well-drawn additions to the collaborative production which look just as good (if not better) in silence than to the peppy beat of the singer’s latest Top 40.
