In Russia, A Hologram Ghost Teaches Bad Drivers a Lesson

People parking in handicap spots in Russia is bad enough that it's come to this.

Imagine you're in the car on the way to a job interview. You're very late to your destination and all the parking spaces are occupied, except for spaces reserved for those with disabilities. You decide to park in one anyway, when the spirit of a man in a wheelchair suddenly appears in front of you shouting, "Stop!"

This horror-esque scene is very much a reality for Russians in parking lots at shopping and business centers in throughout Moscow, including the largest mall in all of Europe. The Russian non-profit Dislife developed a wheelchair hologram for "More Than a Sign," a social experiment designed to raise awareness for the rights of people with disabilities. A recent study by ad agency Y&R Moscow revealed that over 30% of Russian motorists parked illegally in handicap spots. The hologram campaign hopes to stop this inconsiderate behavior.

Dislife placed cameras in parking lots that scan the windshields of all cars parked in handicap spaces. If a car does not have the legal disabled sticker but parks in a disabled space anyway a hologram immediately appears.

The holograms of disabled people appear as ghost-like apparitions through a projection made out of an invisible screen of air saturated with water. The holograms make themselves seen and heard. They shout "Stop!" and describe in great detail why it is important to respect the wheelchair symbol on the ground, "What are you doing? I'm not just a sign on the ground. Don't pretend that I don't exist. Why are you surprised? This is a parking spot for the disabled." The ghost kindly asks them to park somewhere else and rethink their bad habits.

Dislife released a video of the holograms in action, which you can watch below:
