Watch a Planetarium Dome Become a Real-Time Audiovisual Canvas

Audiovisual artist Boris Divider got to use the CLM Museum of the Sciences’ dome as his generative art canvas.

When the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art of Cuenca, Spain celebrated its 50th Anniversary this year, they enlisted audiovisual artist Boris Divider to create a real-time generative audiovisual experience. For his canvas and sonic space, the museum offered Divider the planetarium dome at the Castilla-La Mancha Museum of Science.

The resulting A/V performance, titled Spheral.Dome, is an incredibly beautiful and immersive reactive-generative work. In it, newly composed electronic and drone music trigger an array of geometric shapes, visual patterns, and several layers of video that Divider projected onto the dome.

Divider’s visuals took full advantage of the planetarium’s expansive space. Thankfully, video, shot by Adrian M. Ferrer, allows those who didn’t make the performance to get a feel for what they missed.

Luminous lines sketch flickering trajectories around the various levels of the dome. Other patterned lights grow as if they are a dense universe about to expand into the planetarium’s darker regions. In perhaps the show’s most astonishing moment, Divider uses nearly the full architectural scope of the dome to create something like a three-dimensional wormhole.

As Divider’s work makes wondrously clear, when planetarium domes aren’t showcasing science for the masses, they make great places for immersive fusions of art and technology.
