The newly revealed concept photos show how MAD Architects and Studio Gang are fusing the George Lucas Museum with its surrounding nature.

In July, The Creators Project reported that the upcoming George Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Chicago would be designed by MAD Architects, the innovators behind the organic-looking Absolute Towers in Mississauga, Canada and the water-locked Pingtan Art Museum in the Fujian province of China. Now the company has released its first official concepts for the building, a structure whose surface "blurs the line between structure and landscape," according to a MAD statement.

MAD Architects is collaborating with Studio Gang Architecture to coordinate the layout of the surrounding greenery with the structure of the building. "The design integrates the natural beauty of the park and Lake Michigan with the powerful man-made architecture of Chicago," MAD says in a press release. The firm's organic approach to architecture is most evident in the way the structure seems to sink rise out of the ground and become an opalescent mesa atop Chicago's Northerly Island. That hill will feature four stories of exhibition rooms, movie theaters, and archives, and the floating disk atop the structure will house its own observatory.

The museum is set to be stocked with exhibits from Lucas' private collections of art and Star Wars memorabilia, a collection MAD hopes to add to with the building's design. "The design for the Lucas Museum mirrors the objective of the artwork inside: It tells a story." MAD founder Ma Yansong, whom the Creators Project has previously covered in a documentary, told FastCo. Design that he envisions the George Lucas Museum as the first step towards a curvier future for Chicago's blocky skyline. Perhaps with China's recent announcement eschewing "weird architecture," Ma's signature style will find respite in the Windy City.
