The 'Flip Book Machine' Is 6 Animations in One

Animation and design studio Zumbakamera astounds with some tricky flip book animation.

In the minds of the masses, the flip book might seem like a primitive animation technique, but there's a subculture of artists who are elevating their flip books to new heights. The animation, illustration and design studio Zumbakamera is one such group currently working wonders with this vintage form of animation. They recently released a video of a mockup of what they’re calling Flip Book Machine, which is basically six flip books in one.

Zumbakamera achieve this effect by printing the six different animated scenes from their Bendito Machine series on paper with three different curved edges. When held on the top right edge, for instance, Flip Book Machine shows one animation. When the thumb is dragged across the middle edge, yet another flip animation appears, and the same goes for the bottom edge. When the flip book is turned over, three different animations on the other side of each page can be triggered.

The Flip Book Machine seen in the video below is just a mockup. Those who want to contribute to its development will be able to do so in an upcoming Kickstarter campaign.
