Over The Rainbow With Pogo

Pogo’s video contest beckoned 44 entries and one winner.

Even if you're one of the few who believe the yellow brick road is an allegory for the gold standard in the 1890s, The Wizard of Oz most likely holds a warm place in your heart. One of our favorite mashup artists Pogo samples sound bytes from the movie in his latest track, mastering it into a delightful, electro-pop, toe-tapper. However, instead of creating the music video himself, he held an online contest calling illustrators, designers, and artists to submit a video to accompany the track, “Mellow Brick Road.” The contest winner Reed Gauthier, a recent SCAD graduate, created an equally delightful animation to accompany the song… though our other favorite entries were stick-figure animations and synchronized collages from users Activeobjectx and Goldpikpikcarrots.

Gauthier fits the film's plot perfectly into four minutes and twenty seconds, and uses shadow-puppet rendered silhouettes of the familiar characters. Sharing similar elements with Cartoon Network's Samurai Jack, Gauthier's animation captures the magic of both the original film and Pogo's track. We wonder if Pogo will continue to crowdsource his videos occasionally, or if he’s just too busy Remixing The World.
