An Anonymous Cock Crusader Is Putting Condoms on Penis Graffiti

The good samaritan street artist hopes to make a point about sexual health.

The city streets are not called gritty for nothing, and if one symbol can be deemed commonplace on the walls, traffic signs, and general surfaces of an urban metropolis, it is the graffiti dick. A favorite of teenage deviants and some uninspired commuters, the penis doodle has proliferated across cities like an embarrassing mascot. Now, an anonymous artist, who has seen his fair share of these poorly-drawn graffiti signs across his city in Britain is taking some action. The anonymous artist, who only divulges he is an art director with a general interest in culture and art, emblazons graffiti dicks throughout his British city with a stenciled hot-pink condom alongside helpful educational resources for sexual health. To forward his cause, the artist partnered with Shine, a hub of sexual health services and information for young people.

"This all began by simply walking past a lot of graffiti penises" the artist shares with Creators, "and thinking to myself, 'why hasn't anyone gone out of their way to make something of them—let alone remove them?'" Fed up with the commonplace status of these street doodles, the artist began the project with a simple question: why aren't these drawings at least protected? "I did some research on the same day for some insights and facts, and discovered that in 2015, there were 435,000 new STI cases in the UK, with most aged under 25. So I put two and two together, pulled an all-nighter, and [began] cutting out the stencils. Then I went out on a mission to get the ball rolling," says the artist.

He explains, "You could say I'm educating people, but [more so,] it's taking something that you see as non-informative vandalism, turning it on its head and reproducing it as a positive message that people can quickly understand and have quick laugh at the same time. If this sparks a conversation about safe sex on and off the internet, then I'm more than happy, it's quite [an] important [one]."
