Augmented Reality Egg Hunt Leads New Yorkers Down A Rabbit Hole Of Eggshell Art

The 2014 Egg Hunt asks us to hunt down 250 giant artisan fabergé eggs.

New York is a city filled with infinite possibilities, but when 250 giant artisan fabergé eggs started appearing throughout the city overnight, it still felt like a surprise—it's the Big Apple, not the Big Egg, right? Either way, the 2014 Big Egg Hunt, a challenge for smartphone-wielding New Yorkers to find and digitally 'collect' expertly painted eggs, made us scamble (sorry, couldn't help it) to chase down the spectacular shells.

The eggs include facades created by the hands of premiere artists and designers from all over the world, including Tommy Hilfiger, Terry Richardson, Benjamin Shine, Lego artisan Nathan Sawaya, and Where's Waldo creator Martin Hanford. To participate in the hunt, users can download the free Big Egg Hunt NYC smartphone app, which helps you find eggs, collect them in your 'Egg Basket,' and read about the artists who made them. You can also find a feed of other people's finds, plus a leaderboard ranking top collectors on the app. Winners will get rewarded for their detective skills with prizes, including a Fabergé egg pendant valued at $50,000.

If you're not in the area, or just don't feel like scouring every nook and cranny of the five bouroughs, you can check out people's finds on Instagram with the hashtag #bigegghunt. And if making the effort to go all the way to the Instagram search bar seems a bit much, all the eggs will be gathered in Rockefeller plaza from April 18-25.

After the exhibition is over, the Big Egg Hunt's organizers will sell for the benefit of Elephant Family, a charity focusing on conservation efforts, and Studio in a School, a program that brings visual arts to underserved New York City kids.

You now have 15 days to become the NYC egg-finding champion—time to get (egg) cracking.

See some images from the hunt below. If we missed any good ones, please share with us in the comment section! We promise to share the prizes with you.
