Last night at RM Sotheby's 'Driven by Disruption' auction in New York City, Janis Joplin's famously custom-painted psychedelic Porsche sold for a whopping $1.76 million. It was originally predicted to go for somewhere around $500,000, but smashed that in about five minutes, yesterday breaking the record for most expensive Porsche 356 sold at auction.

The car, which has been under the care of Joplin's siblings since she died, has a history as storied as the singer who owned it. It's been stolen, repainted, restored back to Dave Richards' custom "History of the Universe" designs, and painted over again, but artists later restored the designs. Her car was easily recognizable as she drove it through her beloved Bay Area, and adored by fans for its vibrant, sweeping landscapes and wildlife imagery. Truly a one of a kind for the Queen of Psychedelic Soul.
