Evan Boehm's WebGL project brings an experimental narrative experience to browser-based films.

The Creators Project has partnered with Nexus Interactive Arts and director Evan Boehm to create the interactive film experience The Carp and The Seagull. Using WebGL and HTML5 technology, the narrative will follow the plight of Masato, a village fisherman who spends his placid days fishing near his home. One day he’s confronted by a Japanese spirit being, the Yuki-Onna, and his world is ripped in half.

Using a simple graphical style, the film immerses the user into Masato’s world as he comes into contact with this otherworldly being and journeys into the dark places of the spirit world. You’ll be able to explore the spaces that inform the narrative, coming into contact with the dualistic places Masato comes to inhabit—both the smooth polygon oneness of the natural terrain, juxtaposed with the distorted, abstracted forms of the Yuki-Onna’s domain. It’s a place of calm and chaos, where hidden surprises can be unearthed by the user.

With a musical score by Plaid, the film will showcase experimental narrative experiences in the online environment. Stay tuned to The Creators Project for more insight from Evan Boehm and the full unveiling of this interactive film on the Digital Gallery.
