Pistons And Monocles: Henry Waltz Is An Enchanting Steampunk Animation

Henry Waltz embraces and expands the beguiling “steampunk” genre.

Henry Waltz is a motion picture like no other. Well, to be fair, it isn’t a motion picture yet, but it’s well on it’s way. Director Emil Goodman and his team are behind this daring endeavor, and their impressive teaser trailer has already garnered more than 50,000 views on Vimeo.

Goodman is a talented Hungarian student who has managed to create an intriguing, steampunk world. Monocle-wearing gentlemen and industrial revolution aesthetics share a creative space with various other, more futuristic-leaning, inspirations. The world created by Goodman is simultaneously inhabited by Jules Verne-inspired characters, Japanese aesthetics and very strange insect-like creatures. But what is most impressive is the attention to detail of the immersive environment he creates for these characters.

This animation project is very interesting because it seeks to push animation beyond its classic themes (i.e. anthropomorphized objects and animals). Other animation projects in this genre immediately come to mind: the rather stifling les Triplettes de Belleville or the neo-noir Renaissance. Henry Waltz is in this line of creative works, which attempt to renew a genre otherwise dominated by Pixar and Disney.

Goodman explains some of his animation techniques:

Goodman’s animation is also unique in his “homebrew” approach to 3D animation, even going so far as to make his own motion capture software. The 3D models in the teaser actually reproduce gestures initially performed by Goodman and even Henry Waltz‘s contraptions imitate Goodman’s arm movements.

As of now, Goodman and his team are seeking additional funding to further develop their concept, according to Wired. Whether the project sees the light of day as a full-length animated picture or not, Goodman’s work is rich with detail and elaborate creativity.
