Every filmmaker looks to the masters for inspiration, and we as an audience obsessively break down the homages populating our own favorite movies. Yet over time some great filmmakers and their achievements do go unnoticed. But in these contemporary times, we have the technology to not only dig up these relics but to compare and contrast them with today's films. The latest iteration of this is a video essay by The Petrick, entitled The Revenant by Tarkovsky. It packs just as much punch as the bear attack. Misha Petrick draws parallels from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s drama to Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky’s signature films like Andrei Rublev, The Mirror, Stalker, and Nostalghia.
