Every spring, Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art showcases work by artists and curators under the age of 35 who are destined for greatness. The show is appropriately called Primavera, and its alumni include the likes of Mikala Dwyer, Paul Yore and Shaun Gladwell.

The eight early career artists announced today for this year’s 25th anniversary Primavera, guest curated by Emily Cormack, include Steven Cybulka, Pia van Gelder, Biljana Jancic, Ruth McConchie, Adelle Mills, Mira Oosterweghel, Emily Parsons-Lord and Danae Valenza. Each artist will create new work for the exhibition, which opens on September 29.

Speaking at today’s announcement, MCA’s Director Elizabeth Ann Macgregor noted that the exhibition “has been a continuous feature of the MCA’s program since it opened 25 years ago.”

“We are delighted that it continues to be such an important exhibition for artists, giving them a platform to share their voice, their art, and to introduce new ideas to our ever-increasing audience,” she said.

This year’s Primavera will explores “ideas of transmission”, through highlighting the ways that art can physically connect with the viewer. As such, MCA visitors will be encouraged to experience artworks through all seven senses. One of the chosen artists, Emily Parsons-Lord, will invite gallerygoers to breathe in an air compound that mimics the carbon dioxide levels of 250 million years ago, when the greatest extinction event in earth’s history occurred.

Another artist, Pia van Gelder, will harness the innate capacity of the human body to conduct energy through contact via an electronic circuit which generates sound. Meanwhile, Ruth McConchie will create a virtual reality headset that pulls the viewer down through the watery subterranean spaces beneath the MCA.

Primavera will open on September 29 and continue until December 4. You can find out more about it here.
