Broad grins and broader thighs mark all of Bay Area artist Jeffrey Cheung's exuberant erotic nudes. The Unity Press and Unity Zines founder started Unity Skateboards earlier this year to carve out a niche in visual culture for the LGBTQ skating community. A selection of his work was available at former VICE photo editor Matthew Leifheit's Brooklyn Dirty Book Fair in Greenpoint last weekend, alongside copies of Math Magazine and a performance by M. Lamar.Cheung's drawings are simple: thick black outlines filled in with flesh tones and nothing else. His characters, usually chubby, hairy, happy men, often intertwine around one another in the throes of emotion. Passion, curiosity, playfulness, and sadness imbue them with feeling. He relishes drawing dangling penises and exposed buttholes. "I think I used to have a lot of internalized shame, and depicting these bodies and situations was an another outlet, in a way, to help me come to terms when I was younger," he told i-D in an interview earlier this year. "But I have slowly realized that it is really about celebrating love and sexuality and being unashamed of your body and who you are."His designs are equally engaging as $4 zines, prints to hang on the wall, or skateboard decks, all of which are for sale on his website.
