'Pokémon GO' Simulation Satirizes Spurious Gameplay

This CGI crowd simulation is the very best, like no one ever was.

A silly application of crowd simulation software lampoons Pokémon GO's tendency to get stale after your 19th encounter in a row with Zubat, Rattata, or Pidgey—a.k.a., the common Pokémon. Simulation of how Pokemon GO spawns their commons, a mashup of military paratrooper action footage and CGI, feeds into the zeitgeist against game developers at Niantic for the seemingly haphazard way they planted their Poké-crops.

The 34-second video started out as a simple animation experiment by Nicholas King, a CG Supervisor at OPTIX. He's spent the last three years publishing similar experiments with a plugin for 3D rendering software Maya called Golaem. It calculates how large groups of people, objects—or in this case, Pokémon—would behave under certain conditions. He posted Simulation to his Nixolas YouTube and Vimeo pages, just as he has the 50 videos that came before it.

"I got a few likes and went to bed. The next morning I woke up with hundreds of notifications and email messages. From there it grew exponentially," he says. Since then, he's gotten a multitude of job offers related to the technique. "It's still a challenge realizing the magnitude of the reaction that came from the video. More importantly though, we've been thinking about our next video to produce!"
