The Borders Issue

As my team and I were putting this themeless issue together, we realized that, actually, many of the stories we commissioned touch on the divisions of land and culture. We decided, then, to name it the Borders Issue.

Inside you'll find stories about an ATV-riding nationalist vigilante hunting migrants in Bulgaria; a ragtag mix of mercenaries fighting to stave off Russians in the Ukraine; refugees traveling through Greece seeking a better life; and a border between Italy and Austria that's shifting from climate change.

We also have an exclusive excerpt from Emma Cline's much-anticipated debut novel, The Girls, alongside an essay by Michael Taussig about his time in war-torn Kobani and a profile of saxophonist Kamasi Washington, who's turning on the next generation to jazz music. Plus, Jigsaw's Yasmin Green chimes in on censorship and the future of the internet, and Emma Beals investigates how the regime, rebels, jihadists, and NGOs in Syria are fighting for control of the country's wheat.

If that's not enough, there's a breakdown of international travel by the numbers-in-handy infographic, and Jason Leopold breaks down how the FBI hones in on domestic terrorism.

And for the photography buffs, we have surreal photos abstracting the human form by Blaise Cepis and a beautiful portfolio by Vasantha Yogananthan that explores an Indian epic's influence on the country's imagination.

Enjoy!
