How To Turn Fruits And Veggies Into A Musical Instrument

Using Makey Makey, j.viewz turns fruits and vegetables into an extension of his keyboard.

When your mom used to scold you and tell you not to “play with your vegetables,” this probably is not exactly what she had in mind. Then again, few moms could even conceive of turning your veggies into musical instruments.

A while back we told you about a device called Makey Makey, designed by some whiz kids out of MIT Labs, which can turn absolutely anything in the world into a button. It requires no knowledge of coding for those who are less-than-savvy with programming or circuitry, (in fact, a BBC reporter once said his “four-year-old daughter has managed to connect the kit”), but can be combined with an Arduino for some added processing power.

The Makey Makey demo showed us how the device can turn bananas into musical instruments. Now, in the hands of musician j.viewz, we get a full-fledged musical anthem performed using the contents of a very healthy grocery list. Grapes and mushrooms never sounded so good. It’s further proof that these days, just about anything can be a musical instrument.
