Help Tempt1 and the EyeWriter Posse Take Their Project to the Next Level

Tempt1 original art on Kickstarter.

Being that this venture features a whole slew of our favorite OpenFrameworks allstars; Zach Lieberman, Evan Roth, and creator James Powderly to name a few, it piqued our interest right away.

Long story short: these guys created the EyeWriter to help Tony Quan a.k.a. Tempt1, a graffiti artist who lost all motion except eye motion due to A.L.S., be able to tag again using only his eyes to write with. Because the EyeWriter team deliberately made their eye-tracking hardware and software low-cost and open source, other people can use it too. You can see a pretty impressive performance of Quan writing using his retina above. They are about to release a new version of the software soon that will have updated tracking and include non-graffiti related functions that will allow users to do other things like browse the web and control their computers using only their eyes.

Now that they’ve solved that problem, the EyeWriter team is trying to raise money on Kickstarter to help catapult Quan back to his old lifestyle as a working artist, so he will be able to support himself with his work once again. They are trying to raise $15,000 by October 19th of this year, all by selling limited edition prints of his tags. Click the widget below for more info on how you can get involved and become the owner of some Tempt1 stickers, digital prints, T-shirts, and drawings made with a robotic arm and simultaneously support his continued success as an artist, help pay his hospital bills, and fund the EyeWriter team’s further research.

We love it when science, art, and good works fit together so seamlessly.
